Professional trailbuilders with IMBA's Trail Solutions program have teamed with Trail Dynamics and Arrowhead Trails to create an expansive system of lift-serviced trails at Idaho's Tamarack resort. With 12 miles of expertly constructed downhill mountain bike trails already on the ground, Tamarack has emerged as a destination mountain bike location, and a model center for fast, fun and sustainable freeriding.
Earlier this summer, Tamarack hosted the state championships for downhill riding (photos 1-3), earning rave reviews from competitors. "You can really push yourself on burly double-black diamond lines like Rock Star," says Steve Parrish, an expert-class downhiller and owner of Dirt Dart, a Boise-based bike business. Parrish, who teaches downhill skills courses at Tamarack, adds, "From big drops and jumps, to fast corners and technical rock gardens, the terrain at Tamarack hones every type of riding skill."
Even the top freeriders in the world can find worthy challenges. Check out the trailer for "Kranked 6: the Progression," featuring pro rider Kirt Voreis, with footage shot at Tamarack.
To compliment the adrenaline-infusing rides provided by experts-only trails like Rock Star and Stage Fright, the trailbuilding team has built quality options for intermediate and beginning riders. The recently completed Pura Vida - a Costa Rican expression that translates to "pure life" - offers moderate grades and a wide, smooth surface. Each turn is banked, and there are optional features for more advanced riders to tackle. On opening day, Pura Vida was tested and approved by several families, including an 8-year-old downhiller (photos 4-6).
"The trail building partnership with Tamarack Resort has been special," says IMBA Field Programs Manager Scott Linnenburger. "We're both in this to create a model trail-based resort, with plenty of progressive, long-lasting options for riders of every style. From aggressive downhill to casual singletrack, it's all there, with more to come."
"Tamarack Resort is where we hone our trailbuilding science, it's our trail construction laboratory and in the last two seasons we've discovered a whole new formula for sustainable and exciting lift served DH trails!" Joey Klein, IMBA Trail Solutions/Tamarack Resort Trail Designer.
